After reading last week’s story on making sure your mailings got mailed, Mike, one of my readers, told me that he always wrote his postage checks directly to the post office—never to the lettershop.
He does this to ensure that the money is used only for postage for his jobs.
Mike got it half right...
I told Mike that he was on the right track, and in fact that was one of my recommended steps.
However, I’ve personally experienced situations where the lettershop altered my check so that instead of saying “U.S. Postmaster,” it said “U.S. Postmaster—ABC LetterShop”...and the bank not only cashed the check, they put the money into the lettershop’s account.
So to protect yourself even further, fill out the "pay to the order of" line on your check with asterisks as follows “***U.S. Postmaster********************.”
